Tom graduated Syracuse University in 1984 with a degree in editorial design. He began his career at Reader’s Digest magazine where he did everything from designing page layouts, to drawing custom headline typography, to drawing a library of classic decorative swashes and page decos. His next career stop was Popular Science magazine where he ultimately became Graphics Director. It was during this time that digital media entered the publishing world. He found this to be the tool he was looking for since it could bring together the disciplines of design, typography, photography, and illustration. In 1993, tom white.images was born. His hybrid style of design and illustration put him in demand to create visual images for fast growing business and technology markets. All the while, Tom never forgot his love for typography. Soon after, he started 9 Surf Studios where his focus is still on creating typographic solutions for all media. His clients range from major international corporations, agencies, design firms and publishers, to smaller new businesses, boutique agencies, firms and shops. Tom has won many awards and has had his work featured in several industry books. He works and resides in New York City with his wife Lois and daughter Brielle.
